On The Wing: Birds of Prey Rehabilitation

Jane Kelly, founder of On The Wing, has been working with raptors for 13 years. She is a state and federally licensed rehabber, educator and falconer, specializing in birds of prey. In honor of Earth Day, meet Jane and her team of birds to learn about birds of prey rehabilitation and the importance of these special creatures.

Hearing Loss

Wednesday, April 21, 1:00-2:00 on Zoom

Everything you ever wanted to know about hearing loss—and then some! Melissa Mahaffey, AuD & Director of West Newton Hearing Center, will cover how we hear when things work well and what happens when things go wrong. She will discuss the effects of untreated hearing loss and how treating hearing loss improves more than just our hearing. Contact the COA to register 781 786 6280.

Trail Walk: College Pond

Thursday, April 22: Meet at 12:50 - Walk Begins Promptly at 1:00

There are a few spots left on our trail walk! Enjoy a hike around College Pond and through conservation land on trails in the adjoining woods and fields. The walk will begin at Burchard Park, 269 Concord Rd. Parking is available near the tennis courts. This 1-hour hike will be on flat trails. Participants will be notified by 10:00 am if the walk is cancelled due to inclement weather. Call the COA to sign up. Limit is 12. All attendees are asked to adhere to social distancing guidelines and to wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Contact the COA to register 781 786 6280.

U.S. Experiences & Reflections From an Italian’s Perspective

Monday, April 26, 1:30-2:30 on Zoom

Luisella Raffo will present an Italian’s experiences in the United States, using Italian journalist’s Beppe Severgnini’s reflections as a springboard into the experiences of other Italians visiting this country. No preparatory reading or knowledge of the Italian language is necessary. The class will be informal and conducted in English and provide ample time for discussion.

Dance and Drum Circle

Tuesday, April 27, 11:00-12:00 on Zoom

Tara Murphy, African and Afro-Caribbean dance and drumming teacher and performer, will weave lecture and stories of West Africa with a creative dance and drum class. Tara began studying her heritage through African studies at Yale University and was awarded a Yale fellowship to study traditional dance and drumming at the University of Legon in Ghana, West Africa. Since returning to the US, she has studied with many African and Afro-Caribbean artists. Learn about the history and importance of dance and drumming in West Africa and the power of dance to release energy, lift spirits, and connect with others. With chair dancing and then drumming, we will get in touch with our innate rhythms, and get energy flowing throughout the body. This program will be recorded. 

Brooklyn Bridge and Leonard Zakim/Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge

Friday, April 30, 1:30-2:30 on Zoom

At the time it was built, the Brooklyn Bridge, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet, was the longest suspension bridge in the world, and today it is widely recognized as a symbol of New York. As for the Zakim Bridge, its unique styling quickly led it to become an icon for Boston, often featured in the backdrop of national news channels to establish location. We’ll conclude by visiting a quirky collection of some of the weirdest bridges in the world.

Must have a valid transfer station or recycle only permit to access Composting Facility. No commercial dumping. Leaves must be placed in a compostable bag. Free woodchips and compost available. Please use this facility if dropping off a large load of yard waste.
