The Music of the Civil Rights Movement (1940-1070)

Tuesday, June 22, 1:00-2:00 on Zoom

This program, presented by music historian John Clark, begins with a controversial Marian Anderson concert and shocking songs by Billie Holiday and Oscar Hammerstein, a response to a 1956 racial incident involving Nat King Cole. John will cover the history of 1950s and 60s Civil Rights anthems and songs that were popular near the end of the 60s. The program will conclude with the history of other noteworthy songs by Pete Seeger, Mahalia Jackson, Odetta and Nina Simone as well as fiery proto-rap protest poetry by spoken word artists. Adventures in Architecture: The Crystal Palace

June 25, 2021, 1:30-2:30 on Zoom

Today, a tip of the hat to prince consorts. First, we'll take a look at the Crystal Palace, brainstorm of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, built to house the Great London Exhibition of 1851. Met first with derision, it finally earned for Albert, the respect he had so long sought. Then, in tribute to the late Prince Philip, consort of Queen Elizabeth II, we'll explore the 240-bedroom Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of British sovereigns since 1837.
