Residents Encouraged to Take Precautions

Surrounding communities have mosquito samples that have tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV) and the Department of Public Health is expecting the abundance levels may increase in the coming weeks.

While
Weston is currently in a low risk level, residents should still take precautions to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses.

Personal Protection is Important

The hours between dusk to dawn are peak mosquito biting time. Residents should take personal precautions when outdoors to avoid getting bitten:

  • wear long pants and sleeves
  • wear closed shoes and make sure ankles are covered
  • apply an EPA-approved repellent

Empty Standing Water

Although there have been low amounts of rainfall this summer, take time to empty any source of standing water on your property to prevent breeding, such as:

  • Neglected toys
  • Kiddie pools
  • Wheelbarrows
  • Bird baths
  • Tarps
  • Garden containers

Also clean out any clogged gutters, which is a common source for mosquitoes, and repair any holes in screens.
