Weston in Moderate Risk Level for EEE
Neighboring Towns Upgraded to High/Critical Level
The Department of Public Health has notified Weston's Board of Health that the risk level for the EEE virus has been raised to a moderate risk for Weston. This means there is EEE in our area - not necessarily in the Town of Weston but the situation should be taken seriously and precautions to avoid mosquito bites should be taken. Please know, mosquitoes in Weston are tested frequently by the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project and a truck-mounted treatment was conducted the week of August 26th in northern sections of Weston.
How to Protect Yourself
The recommendation to protect yourself is:
- apply mosquito repellent (see below for additional information)
- wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors
However, given the recently upgraded high and critical levels of our neighboring communities, Weston's Board of Health is issuing the following additional recommendations for residents, until a killing frost occurs:
- Avoid activities during peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn)
- Avoid wooded, wetland, and shaded areas
Additional measures all residents should consider taking:
- reschedule outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning hours
- drain standing water around your home (mosquitoes breed in standing water)
- check rain gutters and drains
- empty unused flower pots and wading pools
- change birdbath water frequently
- repair torn screens on windows

A Note on Mosquito Repellent
Use EPA-registered ingredient:
- DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023)
- oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)]
- IR3535)
according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.
