  1. Local and Global Discussion Group: Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

    March 11, 2021, 1:15 PM - 3:00 PM @ Zoom

From salted nuts to the shirts we put on our backs, most of us are consumers of goods bearing the taint of modern human slavery. Then there is the murky, hyperviolent world of organ trafficking, which thrives not only in less advantaged parts of the world such as Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia and Mexico, but within our own borders as well. This month we’ll talk about “modern” human slavery with its sophisticated worldwide networks of procurement and trafficking operations and how it differs from traditional systems. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in a civil discussion of the issues with wide participation from a variety of individuals. For further information on this meeting in particular or the group in general, contact Susan Wagner at 508-733-8810 or email her at susanwgnr@gmail.com. Contact the COA to register, 781 786 6282.

  1. Non Fiction Book Discussion Group: $2.00 a Day: living on almost nothing in America

    March 11, 2021, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM @ Zoom

Join us as we discuss $2.00 a Day: living on almost nothing in America by Kathryn J. Eding and H. Luke Shafer. This book was one of the New York Times Notable Nonfiction Books of 2015. “This slim, searing look at extreme poverty deftly mixes policy research and heartrending narratives from a swath of the 1.5 million American households eking out an existence on cash incomes of $2 per person per day. Edin and Shaefer, respectively professors at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan, trace the history of welfare in the U.S. up to the cuts enacted by President Clinton. They also explore the worlds of the desperately impoverished, profiling people who are able to find, at best, low-wage jobs with no bargaining power.” – Syndetics, a Bowker service.
